There have been two formal challenges so far – an inaugural national challenge in 2006, and a follow up challenge from Queensland against Lucky Bay, WA in 2009.
Click on the year tabs to see to results of the challenges. A graph showing the reflectance of whitest beach samples in the visible and infrared wavelengths is shown below. Note that Lucky Bay has the highest reflectance over the entire measured spectrum.
There are more beaches out there that could challenge for the right to be Australia’s whitest beach. Bring them on!
